Just ran across this video. To lose a child anywhere along life's path is devastating. My condolences to the family. I thought that one could make segments of contrasting wood by rough turning the outside but matching the inside and gluing together. Next would be turning the outside and prepping for a lid of some sort. Will take time to watch the entire video in the future.

Watching the video again in anticipation for making some pendants for a craft mall. Question: Could one use a glue block for the first part of turning the wood instead of tape? On the melamine piece, how much did you offset it to drill the hole? Thanks two bunches!

I just learned why i should need to use this tool. I been using a bowl gauge. Bigger, sharper. I will start used spindle gauge .

My Dremel is my friend, with my etching tool, for those those small detailing things like the "j" cut on the side of the yarn bowl.

😊😊😊 I make 2 inch to 3 inch thick walking sticks with them. 6 feet or so. Stain them and lacquer them. Perfect for cheap and sustainable hobbies. I deliver and during summer Yard Crews have piles of them. They are happy for me to take a bundle or 2. Very nice results from what my friends and neighbors say. I don't sell them. I just let a person choose the one they prefer.

0222 there may have been tension from expansion chuck. 0240 why is there so much chatter/noise.?!!?? operator error, maybe. 0708 yeah, just STAB it in there.! 0922 you are choking the tool. 1010 whynhel did this take so much time to do.! 1035 dum, dum, dumb 1130 not recommended.! 1208 dum, dum, dumb 1234 WHY were you even rotating the gouge AT ALL.! 1255 same question can you spell aggressiveness issues.

I was turing a three corner bowl from a cube of cherry wood. During the process, the first joint on my left index finger got smacked by the corners of the wood. That was several years ago and my finger still hurts.

This video was too late. I have already made most of those mistakes. But thank you for sharing anyway. They are good for a refresher. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

Always helpful to see these videos because they help confirm assessment of root cause for many of the same issues encountered in my own turnings. Skatebacks are probably the most egregious and aggravating occurrences because of the damage done to a piece that is often nearing completion. Appreciate you sharing these incidents -- it helps make all of us better.

Well, that was fun, Mike. I had the same problem you had at 11:10. Sorry I can show a photo of my fix, but it shows often in my videos. My magnetic hold for the spindle lock is mounted on a stick with a red plastic stop sign symbol at the top that stand in front of power and speed controls. The only hard part is remembering to use that when I lock the spindle with the indexer.

Thanks, Mike. Just about every clip reminded me of things that happened to me, too. There is always that moment immediately after the event where I stop and take stock. I count fingers. I check for blood. I look for the damage to the piece and the surroundings. I say a little thank-you.

Mike, do you consider the thickness and width of the wood before you start? To determine what the end result might be?

Useful tips I bought a Nova DVR lathe that the previous owner had not cared for, after much cleaning oiling and other bits of maintenance which I won’t go into finally it is operational ani have got it running but after bolt it h lathe down to a bench there is till some vibration. Definitely going to check now with a spirit level and thought I might bolt the bench to a wall of the workshop Thanks for your. Advice

Excellent demo, however you did skip one step that if you are turning a thin bowl can created a problem. But even in a regular thickness bowl it is a good practice. Once you make the flip to the tenet you need to true up the outside. In green wood or dry for that matter you can end up with different wall tall thickness. On a thin piece it can result in hole on one side to the bowl. Dont ask me how I know this. Still a good video and I enjoy it. I call it a natural edge bowl LOL.

Your AI queries are interesting in that they are a consolidation of all the data each of those AI systems had incorporated into their training sets. That kind of indicates that the sum total of all online data on this subject is highly mixed and inconclusive. Always enjoy watching your videos, even if they are just 4 1/2 minutes of my life I won't get back. 😄

I think this is a discussion topic that could be debated for days. My $.02 is that "live" edge bowls still have the bark on, "natural" edge one do not. However, the table makers seem to have a different nomenclature than wood turners.

Great job attempting to define a term that is very ambiguous Mike.

I cut down a large one that split in a storm last year and just have it piled up in a big brush pile at the back of my property. I got a 10x18 mini lathe for Christmas and now that pile that I was going to burn off suddenly seems to be worth saving a lot of, lol.

Thanks for the mention and the discussion, Mike. Granted, the live/natural subject is not of earthshaking concern. But, if a tree is alive, it definitely has bark on it. So, bark on, live edge. All in all, this approaches the level of the discussion of how many angels can sit on the head of a pin.

Some say one way and some say the other. I just pick up a tool and turn, not being concerned with what to call it. However it is still interesting to hear what the experts have to say. In this case even the experts vary a little bit. Thank you for sharing Mike. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

This subject came up in a class at Arrowmont several years ago. After some discussion among several of us students, our instructor cut to the chase and said natural edge bowls can be done with or without bark. The instructor: David Ellsworth. Good enough for me!

A number of years ago I tried to clear up this same exact question with numerous turners but I also got a lot of different answers, The way I look at I look at it is if a live edge bowl has bark on it it should be considered a live edge (the way the tree was when it was alive). A natural edge bowl with no bark is is just that it is showing the natural edges of the bowls.
